Sudden illness or injury can occur without warning, and while no one typically plans a trip to the Emergency Department, everyone should know what to expect after they arrive. The Emergency Department (ED) at JJ Institute of Medical Sciences provides urgent care to patients who have traumatic injury, major illnesses or other issues that require immediate treatment. The staffs include experienced physicians, skilled nurses and other healthcare professionals who follow specific procedures so that you can get the care you need as quickly as possible. Following are the five steps to expect when you arrive at JJ Institute of Medical Sciences.

Step 1 – Triage

Triage is the first process of determining the severity of a patient’s condition. Patients with the most severe emergencies need immediate treatment. The triage registered medical specialist might assign you a priority level based on your medical history and current condition according to the following scale: 1 – Resuscitation, 2 – Emergency; 3 – Urgent; 4 – Semi-urgent; 5 – Non-urgent.

Step 2 – Registration

The registration process is important and the reasons can be: it lets the ED staff gather information for your patient record and we obtain your consent for treatment. Both are necessary to order diagnostic tests to enable the physician determine the best treatment option for the patient.

Step 3 – Treatment

Every patient who comes to the Emergency Department at JJIMS, receives immediate treatment from an attending physician or a nurse. A nurse or technician may take patient’s blood or urine samples, or they may send them for an X-ray or other imaging test before a physician sees them. The results at JJIMS could be available within one to two hours, while you are in the ED. However, few test results may require a longer wait.

Step 4 – Re-evaluation

An ED physician will re-evaluate your condition after they receive your test results as the results may give them additional insight into the type of treatment you need. You know patient’s body. After their re-evaluation, the attending physician determines whether they should be admitted to the hospital or treated and discharged.

Step 5 – Discharge

All patients receive written instructions for home-care to follow after being discharged. The instructions describe how you can safely care for your wound or illness, directions for your prescribed medications and follow-up medical care recommendations.

At JJIMS we recognize the value of every patient and are guided by our commitment to clinical excellence and treatment outcome. We offer an array of medical and surgical services, including 24-hour emergency care, backed by the latest technology. We strive to create a compassionate environment where our employees can deliver the best care every hour of every day.
